What AI Visibility Is
Those come apart more often than most teams expect. A page can hold position one in Google and never be cited by ChatGPT, because the model built its answer from a Reddit thread, a review site, and two comparison pages that never mention you.
The three things that decide an AI answer#
Mention. Does your brand name appear in the response text? This is binary and it is the floor. No mention means the buyer never learns you exist.
Position. Where inside the answer? Being named first in a list of three reads as a recommendation. Being named eighth reads as a footnote, and most readers stop before they reach you.
Citation. Which URLs did the model pull from? Citations are the mechanism. Models assemble answers out of sources, so the fastest way to change what an answer says is to change which sources exist and what they say about you.
Why your Google position does not carry over#
Search ranks pages. Assistants synthesise claims. When a model answers "best AI visibility tools for a SaaS marketing team," it does not open the top ten blue links and read them in order. It leans on the sources it has learned to trust for that kind of question, and those skew toward third-party and community content: Reddit threads, review sites, comparison pages, official docs.
On a typical buyer prompt the source mix looks less like your sitemap and more like a conversation happening about you elsewhere. Owned content is part of the picture, but it is rarely the majority of it.
What you can actually control#
You cannot edit a model's weights. You can change the inputs it reads:
- Be present in the source types the model favours for your category
- Publish documentation that answers the buyer's question directly, in the words they use
- Get into comparison and alternative pages where the decision is being made
- Fix the pages that mention you but describe you wrong
Measuring which of these is missing is the job of prompt tracking and citation analysis.
