Why documentation matters for SaaS: the hidden ROI

What does bad documentation actually cost?#
Bad documentation does not create a cost line. It moves cost onto three teams that already have budget: support, engineering onboarding, and sales. That is why it stays invisible in a spreadsheet and expensive in practice.
The three transfers, in the order most companies notice them:
- Support. A question the docs do not answer becomes a ticket. Your support team spends its day being a slower, more expensive search interface for knowledge you already own.
- Onboarding. A new engineer who cannot find the answer reconstructs it by reading source code or asking a colleague. Both cost more than reading a page, and the colleague pays too.
- Adoption and evaluation. A feature nobody can find is a feature nobody uses. An evaluator who cannot answer "does it do X?" in the first five minutes assumes it does not.
How do I measure the cost of bad documentation on my own product?#
Measure the transfers, not the docs. Four counts, all of which you can pull this week:

The first two are the cheapest and the most convincing. A month of tagged tickets turns "our docs could be better" into a list with counts next to it.
Why do so many SaaS companies still get this wrong?#
Documentation has no owner in most orgs. Engineering writes it under deadline, marketing does not consider it a channel, and support inherits the consequences without the ability to fix the cause. Nobody's quarterly goal moves when a page gets better, so nobody edits the page.
The second reason is that the work is invisible until it is measured. Support ticket volume is reported; "tickets that a page would have prevented" is not reported anywhere by default.
What does the documentation landscape look like in 2026?#
The tools split into two families, and picking the wrong family costs more than picking the wrong product inside a family.

Static generators cost engineering hours and no subscription. Managed platforms cost a subscription and no engineering hours. Both fail in the same way when nobody owns the content.

What does Docsbook change about this?#
Docsbook publishes the Markdown already in your GitHub repository as a documentation site, and reports what readers did with it. The mechanisms, not the promises:
- The source of truth stays in Git. Docs are edited in the same pull request as the code that changed, so a page going stale is visible in review rather than discovered by a customer.
- The site is readable by machines. Docsbook publishes

How do I know my documentation is good enough?#
Answer these four questions with evidence rather than opinion. Each maps to a count from the table above.
- Can a new developer reach a first working result without asking a person?
- Are the ten most common support questions answered on a page, each findable by the words the customer used?
- Does a search engine or an AI assistant return your page for a question about your product, or does it return somebody else's?
- When a reader searches your docs site and gets nothing, does anyone see that search?
If any of those has no answer, the fix is a measurement, not a redesign.
What does Docsbook cost?#
